Why use liquid or powder supplements for pets

Giving a dog a tablet can vary in difficulty depending on the individual dog and their temperament. While some dogs may readily accept and swallow a tablet, others may be more resistant or challenging to medicate. The size and texture of the tablet can also affect the ease of administration. Smaller tablets or those with a smooth coating may be easier to swallow, while larger or rough-textured tablets may be more noticeable to the dog and harder to administer.

Dogs that are highly food-motivated may be more easily persuaded to take a tablet if it is hidden within a tasty treat or wrapped in a small amount of food that they enjoy. Using food as a reward or distraction can make the process easier.

Our own dog was incredibly resistant to taking his supplement tablet so we created the GudFur range of Liquid and Powder supplements to make pet owners lives easier.

We have done this for several reasons:

Ease of administration: Liquid or powder supplements can be easier to administer to pets compared to pills or tablets. They can be mixed with food or water, making it more convenient for pet owners to ensure their pets receive the necessary supplements.

Palatability: Liquid or powder supplements can often be formulated with flavours that are appealing to pets. This can make it easier to entice pets to consume the supplement, especially if they are picky eaters or have a preference for certain tastes.

Absorption and bioavailability: Liquid supplements can be quickly absorbed by the body, allowing for faster delivery of nutrients. Powders can also be easily mixed into a liquid or moist food, aiding in their absorption. This helps ensure that the pet's body can effectively utilize the nutrients in the supplement.

Customizable dosing: Liquid or powder supplements often allow for more precise dosing based on the pet's size, weight and specific needs. This flexibility allows pet owners to adjust the dosage according to the recommendations of veterinarians or specific health conditions.

Versatility: Liquid or powder supplements can be used for various purposes, such as promoting joint health, supporting digestive function, improving coat and skin condition, boosting immune function or addressing specific nutrient deficiencies. They offer versatility in addressing different health concerns for pets.

Suitable for pets with swallowing difficulties: Some pets, particularly older animals or those with medical conditions may have difficulty swallowing pills or tablets. Liquid or powder supplements provide an alternative form that can be easier for these pets to consume and digest.

It is important to note that the use of supplements for pets should be done under the guidance on the appropriate type and dosage needed for the size of your pet and the supplement being used.

Cats may be more challenging to administer tablets or powder supplements compared to dogs for several reasons:

Sensitivity to taste and smell: Cats have a more refined sense of taste and smell and they can be more sensitive to the flavours and odours of medications or supplements. If a tablet or powder has a strong or unpleasant taste or smell, cats may refuse to consume it.

Texture and size of tablets: Cats have smaller mouths compared to dogs and some tablets may be difficult for them to swallow due to their size or texture. Cats may be more discerning when it comes to texture and may resist swallowing a tablet that feels uncomfortable or foreign in their mouth.

Independent nature: Cats are known for their independent nature and they may be more resistant to being restrained or manipulated for medication administration. They may be more likely to resist or become stressed during the process, making it more challenging to give them tablets or powder supplements.

Trust and familiarity: Cats are creatures of habit and may be wary of new or unfamiliar substances. They may be more reluctant to accept tablets or powder supplements because they are not part of their regular routine or diet. Building trust and gradually introducing new tastes or textures can help overcome their reluctance.

Given these challenges, to make it easier to administer powder supplements to cats, mix it with a small amount of wet food, canned tuna or other enticing food that your cat enjoys.

Make sure you review the GudFur guidance on the appropriate dosage for your cat's specific weight. It is important to note that while supplements can be beneficial for some pets, they should not replace a balanced and nutritious diet. They should be used as a supplement to support overall health and well-being of your furry friends.
